social justice - a verb: liberation takes works.

This workshop serves as a critical foundation to equity work. We begin with understanding how power and privilege operate systemically. We dive into essential definitions and terminology related to social justice, identity, power and privilege. In these discussions we explore topics related to gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, intersectionality and more. In our examinations of power and privilege, we question our role in the cycle of oppression through a series of reflection questions and identity exercises. Together we will foster a space to reflect on social justice as it relates to specific roles /responsibilities.

Love as praxis: a radical grounding for liberation work

What is love? What is the role of love in supporting ourselves and supporting those we serve within these institutions? What barriers get in the way of grounding our work in love? This workshop will provide a space to explore these questions and examine love as a resistive and liberatory practice. This discussion will have its grounding in the love ethic ideology offered through the works of bell hooks and others. hooks suggest that “society’s collective fear of love must be faced if we are to lay claim to a love ethic that can inspire us and give us the courage to make necessary changes.” Participants will engage and dialogue with these concepts and explore questions related to love as a resistive and liberatory practice. Don’t Lay Low: Have the audacity to change

Recently covert and overt messages suggest work that requires challenging systems of oppression lay low or be less audacious in their pursuits. This presentation/workshop combats these oppressive messages while also providing language, skills and strategic practices necessary in continuing identity, social justice, anti-oppression work. Furthermore, this workshop seeks to celebrate and rejuvenate those who have been audacious in this fight; encourage those who are struggling or are in conflict with the systems they are trying to challenge/change; and inspire those who are seeking to start incorporating anti-oppression practices into their work/daily lives
